{"id":2825,"date":"2007-07-28T22:26:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-29T03:26:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-03-27T21:29:05","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T02:29:05","slug":"tools-of-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/2007\/07\/28\/tools-of-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Tools of the Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have several web sites. \u00a0Different ones for different purposes. \u00a0For my latest effort, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wirerimbooks.com\">WireRimBooks.com<\/a> company website, I am experimenting with the <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Google Apps<\/span> on-line web composer. \u00a0It&#8217;s not my favorite, but it is a quick way to produce a simple website. \u00a0I do have to pop over into <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Firefox<\/span> to run their composer, but that&#8217;s easy enough. \u00a0I suspect they&#8217;ll have Safari support before too long.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In contrast, the <a href=\"http:\/\/HenryMelton.com\">HenryMelton.com<\/a> website is composed using <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">iWeb<\/span> on my mac and then uploaded to the hosting site. \u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">iWeb<\/span> gives me a graphically richer set of options, and many more styles to choose from. \u00a0However, even with that, there are a few things I need that you can only get by hand-coding. \u00a0For example, my <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">Library<\/span> page has a bookself gadget that is run from an xml data file. \u00a0I wrote that snippet before using <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">iWeb<\/span> and carried it over by adding a post-processing step.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">iWeb<\/span>&#8216;s version of the <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">Library.html<\/span> page, there&#8217;s a simple marker that is swapped out by a perl program right before I upload the site. \u00a0My workflow goes: \u00a0edit in <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">iWeb<\/span>, <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">save to folder<\/span>, run <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">patchiWeb<\/span>, run <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">push2site<\/span>. \u00a0 \u00a0The last two programs are custom scripts that edit the composed html files and then use rsync to push the changes to the final location.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The one big advantage of using these two different tools is that the resulting websites look very different. \u00a0It helps me keep the two different roles straight in my head. \u00a0<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have several web sites. \u00a0Different ones for different purposes. \u00a0For my latest effort, the WireRimBooks.com company website, I am experimenting with the Google Apps on-line web composer. \u00a0It&#8217;s not my favorite, but it is a quick way to produce a simple website. \u00a0I do have to pop over into Firefox to run their composer,&hellip;
