{"id":2645,"date":"2008-02-19T23:42:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-20T04:42:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-03-27T21:27:10","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T02:27:10","slug":"i-really-need-to-teleport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/2008\/02\/19\/i-really-need-to-teleport\/","title":{"rendered":"I Really Need to Teleport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The artwork CD didn&#8217;t arrive. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a week since it was mailed. \u00a0The delivery lady said they were still catching up from Valentine and the postal holiday. \u00a0But that still leaves me stranded with the clock ticking on my projects. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div>So, time to go see <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">Jumper<\/span>. \u00a0I&#8217;d been planning to see Steven Gould&#8217;s movie&#8230;or rather the movie based on his book, since it came out. \u00a0Honestly, I&#8217;ve been hoping it would be a monster hit that would make greedy Hollywood types go hunting for some other novel about teleporting teenagers that they could make more movies about. \u00a0Hey, I&#8217;m willing to option.<\/div>\n<div>But the first reviews I saw were less than stellar. \u00a0I had to go see it myself. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div>So, I did. \u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">I<\/span><\/span> liked it. \u00a0It was quite a travelogue, with the hero popping around all over the world. \u00a0The storyline was fairly simple. \u00a0Loner kid can teleport, has fun for eight years, and then has weird secret organization hunting him down. \u00a0Mayhem ensues. \u00a0Oh yes, there was a girl, and his mysterious mother.<\/div>\n<div>I can understand where the reviews were coming from. \u00a0Samuel Jackson, playing the villain, just walked through the role. \u00a0If you saw the movie for him, it was only worth two stars. \u00a0But since I wrote a teleportation novel myself, I was interested in how our works differed. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div>There were lots of differences, of course. \u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0765357690?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=henrymeltonsc-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0765357690\">Jumper<\/a><\/span> uses a psychic gift, very much like Bester&#8217;s <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0679767800?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=henrymeltonsc-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0679767800\">The Stars My Destination<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0My <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0615153577?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=henrymeltonsc-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0615153577\">Emperor Dad<\/a><\/span> has technological teleportation, with creative software to make it personal. \u00a0But both stories touch on how disruptive teleportation can be to the existing economy. \u00a0And both have powerful organizations out to stop it. \u00a0I personally recommend that every school in the country should buy both books and use them as study guides on the topic of disruptive changes. \u00a0Feel free to use the links above.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The artwork CD didn&#8217;t arrive. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a week since it was mailed. \u00a0The delivery lady said they were still catching up from Valentine and the postal holiday. \u00a0But that still leaves me stranded with the clock ticking on my projects. \u00a0 So, time to go see Jumper. \u00a0I&#8217;d been planning to see Steven Gould&#8217;s&hellip;
