{"id":1871,"date":"2011-12-06T17:29:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-03-27T21:18:27","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T02:18:27","slug":"tagging-my-itunes-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/2011\/12\/06\/tagging-my-itunes-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"Tagging My iTunes Songs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m an enthusiastic adopter of iTunes Match, but I have also been an extensive builder of Smart Playlists. &nbsp;Unfortunately, not all Smart Playlists that work in the Mac&#8217;s iTunes window will be accepted by iTunes Match. &nbsp;This is my failed attempt to work around it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, consider this one:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-sOIAUKXSdIo\/TtqxII2F9JI\/AAAAAAAABAg\/cE-oK5WJtGI\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2011-12-03+at+5.20.23+PM.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ScreenShot2011-12-03at5.20.23PM.png\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>For some reason, this one is rejected by iTunes Match with the comment that it doesn&#8217;t like playlists that are dependent on other playlists. &nbsp;(This doesn&#8217;t seem to always apply.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-XV0Eabdd5uA\/TtqxKD3LmZI\/AAAAAAAABA4\/vqu9nWFUlVw\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2011-12-03+at+5.26.36+PM.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"38\" src=\"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ScreenShot2011-12-03at5.26.36PM.png\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a>(<i>Ignore the fact that I&#8217;m showing you the wrong playlist. &nbsp;I screenshotted the wrong one, but the mark is what I was talking about.<\/i>)<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>So in the playlist pane, there is a slashed cloud marker and it doesn&#8217;t appear on my iPhone and iPhone and on another Mac, there&#8217;s an error marker. &nbsp;I hope eventually iTunes Match will handle it, but until then, I&#8217;ve chosen to work around it by adding tags to my music. &nbsp;I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re familiar with #hashtags in Twitter and other places. &nbsp;I needed a way to mark all my Instrumental songs, without just making a playlist of them.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was to re-purpose the Genre marker, but that would lose possibly valuable information. &nbsp;There are Holiday instrumentals and Jazz instrumentals and many others. &nbsp;So I could just add the information to the Comments field. &nbsp;Of course that could be laborious to add manually (to avoid wiping out any existing comments). <\/p>\n<p>So. &nbsp;Applescript. &nbsp;But before I opened up the Script Editor and wasted some time writing one of my own, I went to the Doug&#8217;s Scripts site and there it was, exactly what I had intended to write for myself. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dougscripts.com\/014\">Append to Comments<\/a>. &nbsp;It&#8217;s donationware, and worth making a trip to Paypal.<\/p>\n<p>I loaded the script, went to my Instrumental playlist, selected all tracks and ran the script from the pulldown:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-2XbT93xk5YM\/TtqxJhySetI\/AAAAAAAABAw\/6J0RcB9c8V8\/s1600\/Screen+Shot+2011-12-03+at+5.22.00+PM.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ScreenShot2011-12-03at5.22.00PM.png\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I chose to use the &lt; &gt; markers so that I could easily mark the beginning and end of the flag when hunting for it. &nbsp;That way I can have multiword tags and tags that are subsets of other tags. &nbsp;I then changed the Smart Playlist to:<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/henrymelton.net\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ScreenShot2011-12-03at5.21.02PM.png\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;
